Glee star Naya Rivera is believed to have drowned in a “tragic accident” while boating with her young son on a lake in California, police say.
The 33-year-old woman reportedly disappeared Wednesday afternoon when her boat was spotted drifting off Lake Piru, northwest of Los Angeles.
Her 4 year old son was found sleeping on board. He told the police that they were swimming, but his mother did not return.
Search teams hunt for her body, but the conditions are difficult.
Rivera is best known for playing cheerleader Santana Lopez in Glee, the hugely popular musical comedy TV series that ran on the Fox network from 2009 to 2015.
What is known about the boating incident?
According to authorities, Rivera and her son rented a boat together at 13:00 Pacific time in 2000.
The boat was supposed to return in three hours, but when the couple did not return, the workers went in search of them.
Police said the child was found by another man on the lake “sleeping and wearing a life jacket.”
After a large-scale search and rescue operation, no traces of Rivera’s police were sent to the “search and recovery operation.”
“We’re presuming that an accident happened and we’re presuming that she drowned in the lake,” Chris Dyer from the Ventura County Sheriff’s said.
“The goal is still to bring Ms Rivera home to her family so they can have some closure,” Mr Dyer added.
Visibility in the lake is low, and police also warned that it might take weeks to find the body, if at all.
Who is Naya Rivera?
Rivera began her career as a child actress and model, appearing in television commercials in the United States.
When she was four years old, she starred in a Royal Family sitcom, and had a number of other TV appearances.
But it was the game with the cold-blooded Santana Lopez in ‘Glee’ that made her a star in America.
In 2014, Rivera starred in the horror film At the Devil’s Door.
In the same year, she married actor Ryan Dorsey, who is the father of her son. The couple divorced in 2018 and have joint custody of the boy.
Her final Instagram post on Tuesday shows herself and her son with the caption “just the two of us”.
